The death toll from the tragic bus accident at Daulatdia ferry ghat in Rajbari has climbed to 24, authorities confirmed on Thursday. The victims include 11 women, eight children and four men, marking one of the deadliest transport disasters in the region in recent years.

Rajbari’s Additional Superintendent of Police (Administration and Finance), Tapas Kumar Pal, said 21 bodies have already been handed over to families as rescue and identification efforts continue.

The accident occurred around 5:15pm on Wednesday when a Dhaka‑bound passenger bus lost control and plunged into the Padma River from pontoon No. 3 at Daulatdia ghat. The bus had originally departed Kumarkhali in Kushtia with just six passengers, but many more boarded along the route. Counter officials estimate at least 50 passengers were on board at the time of the crash. Several managed to escape moments after the vehicle went into the water.

Emergency teams from the Fire Service and other agencies launched rescue operations immediately, working through the evening to recover bodies and search for survivors.

Rajbari Deputy Commissioner Sultana Akter told reporters that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman personally called to inquire about the situation and instructed authorities to act swiftly and keep him updated. She added that a high‑level probe committee is being formed with representatives from the district administration, BIWTA, BIWTC and police to investigate the cause of the tragedy.

The community remains in mourning as families wait for answers and authorities work to determine how a routine river crossing turned into a devastating loss of life.
