Rescue teams in Karachi are working into a second day to find survivors after a residential building collapsed in the impoverished Lyari neighborhood, leaving at least 21 people dead. Authorities reported that the rescue operation is ongoing, but the narrow streets and limited access have hampered efforts to reach those trapped beneath the rubble.
Residents heard cracking sounds shortly before the building, which was located in a neighborhood once plagued by gang violence, crumbled on Friday morning local time. The building had been declared unsafe, and eviction notices had been issued to occupants over the past three years. However, landlords and some residents told AFP they had not received any such notices.
Senior district official Javed Nabi Khoso confirmed on Saturday that the death toll remained at 21 and that rescue operations continued. Families said at least eight people were believed to still be trapped as temperatures rose to 33 degrees Celsius.
Dev Raj, 54, told AFP that his daughter was trapped beneath the debris. “She was my beloved daughter. She was so sensitive but is under the burden of debris. She got married just six months ago,” he said, his voice filled with anguish.
The building was situated on a narrow street, complicating efforts to bring in heavy rescue equipment. It remains unclear whether anyone else is still inside, but the ongoing search reflects the urgency of the situation.
