The number of fatalities from the fuel tanker explosion in Pakistan’s southwestern Balochistan province has increased to 19, according to government officials. This new death toll was confirmed on Monday, a week after the incident occurred.

French news agency AFP reports that the explosion took place on April 28 in the Nushki district of Balochistan. Local media detailed that a fuel-carrying tanker overturned near a market in Nushki, and shortly afterward, the tanker caught fire. As people gathered to collect spilled fuel from the wreckage, a devastating explosion occurred. The blast injured over 60 people, many of whom suffered severe burns, and they were rushed to hospitals in Karachi for treatment.

Local police officer Muhammad Hasan Mengal told AFP that the death toll from the explosion has now risen to 19. Authorities indicated that the tanker was involved in smuggling oil from Iran, and the explosion resulted in the death of the driver along with 18 others. More than 60 people were injured, with many suffering burns covering 70 to 80 percent of their bodies.

The explosion caused the tanker to catch fire again during repairs. Most of the injured in Karachi have severe burns, and many are in critical condition. The bodies of 16 victims have been handed over to their families, while the remains of the other three victims are still at the hospital in Quetta.

Officials believe the tanker was part of a smuggling operation involving oil from Iran. The incident highlights ongoing issues related to illegal fuel smuggling and hazardous transportation in the region.
