British singer and former frontman of The Smiths, Morrissey, has cancelled two U.S. concerts after receiving a credible death threat ahead of his performance at a music festival in Ottawa, Canada. A 26 years old Ottawa resident was arrested and later released on bail for allegedly threatening to kill the outspoken artist. Despite the threat, Morrissey went on to perform in Ottawa, but later pulled out of scheduled shows in Boston and Connecticut.
The MGM Music Hall at Fenway confirmed the cancellation in an Instagram post, citing safety concerns for the artist and his band. Morrissey, known for his strong views on politics and animal welfare, has a history of making bold public stands, refusing to tour in Canada in 2006 in protest of the country’s seal hunt. His recent tour was set to mark a return to Canadian stages, but the incident has reignited concerns over his safety while on tour.
Organizers emphasized that the decision to cancel the U.S. shows was made out of an abundance of caution. The singer has not issued a personal statement yet, but fans have expressed both concern and disappointment across social media platforms. Many expressed concern that such threats could discourage artists from touring freely. Local authorities in Ottawa are continuing their investigation into the individual who allegedly made the threat. Meanwhile, venues in both the U.S. and Canada are reassessing their security protocols for high-profile events. Morrissey’s team has not confirmed whether future tour dates will be affected by the incident.
