A devastating road accident in western Afghanistan’s Herat province has claimed 71 lives, among them at least 17 children. The tragedy unfolded on the outskirts of Guzara city when a passenger bus collided with a truck and a motorcycle, sparking a massive fire.
The bus was carrying Afghan nationals travelling from Iran to Kabul many of them recently forced to return under Iranian government orders. Authorities say excessive speed and driver negligence were key factors in the crash.
The victims were part of a larger wave of returnees: since January, hundreds of thousands of Afghans have been sent back from Iran, with many struggling to rebuild their lives in a country already facing deep economic hardship. Tuesday’s accident stands as one of the deadliest in recent years, underscoring the dangers on Afghanistan’s roads and the human toll of mass deportations.
