Deadly Floods Paralyse Bali and Force Mass Evacuations

1 min read

Bali has been hit by severe and unusual flooding after two days of relentless rain submerged homes, swamped major roads, and forced large-scale evacuations across the island.

Authorities confirmed at least six deaths in Bali, with several more people still missing. The flooding has affected five cities, including the provincial capital Denpasar, and reached the popular tourist hub of Kuta. Around 200 rescuers have been deployed to low-lying areas, navigating chest-deep waters in rubber boats to reach stranded residents.

Dramatic footage from Denpasar’s search and rescue agency shows fast-moving floodwaters tearing through streets in West Denpasar, even toppling a multi-storey building. The force of the water has left parts of the city inaccessible, with key roads gridlocked and access to Bali’s international airport severely restricted on Wednesday evening.

The disaster has also struck beyond Bali. In Indonesia’s East Nusa Tenggara province, heavy rain triggered flooding that killed four people, according to the national disaster mitigation agency.
