Darjeeling Landslides Kill 28 After Record Rainfall

1 min read

Darjeeling has been devastated by torrential rain and landslides, with at least 28 people confirmed dead after 261 millimetres of rain fell in just 12 hours on Sunday the heaviest downpour recorded in the district since 1998.

According to officials, the worst-hit areas include Mirik, Sukhiapokhri, Saureni, Upper Dudhia, Jasbirgaon, and Nagrakota. Mirik alone reported 11 fatalities. Residents said they had not witnessed such intense rainfall in decades.

The relentless rain triggered multiple landslides. Late Sunday night, a collapse near Daragaon in Saureni destroyed a house, while four to five homes in Upper Dudhia and Damphadar were swept into the Dudhia River. Several homestays and a Border Security Force camp were also damaged.

Bridges have collapsed in several locations, cutting off road links between Darjeeling, Siliguri, and Kalimpong in Sikkim. With the Dudhia River bridge washed away, Mirik has been left completely isolated.

Police confirmed that multiple highways and local roads remain closed due to landslides. Rescue and rehabilitation operations are underway, with emergency teams working to restore access and provide relief to affected residents.
