Cyclone Threat Looms Over Queensland: Preparations Intensify as Category Two System Approaches

2 min read

Warnings are in effect from Double Island Point to just south of the Queensland and New South Wales border as a category two cyclone is expected to make landfall early Saturday morning, most likely between Noosa and Coolangatta.

Senior meteorologist Matthew Collopy has reported that although the cyclone’s movement has slowed overnight, this could lead to increased destructive potential as it approaches the southeast coast. Premier David Crisafulli noted that the system is already beginning to “pack a punch,” raising concerns for residents in the path of the storm.

In anticipation of the cyclone’s impact, supermarkets in affected areas have begun closing their doors, while others have adjusted their hours. Public transport services will remain suspended until at least Friday, and elective surgeries have been canceled, with further updates expected as the situation evolves.

Mr. Crisafulli assured that roads and bridges would be kept open “for as long as we can” to facilitate movement for essential workers. However, flood mapping from the Sunshine Coast Council indicates that thousands of properties could be at risk if storm surges coincide with already high tides.

To ensure the safety of residents, refuge centers have been established in Landsborough, Caloundra, and Nambour for those seeking shelter as the storm approaches. Pastor Dale Dowler, who operates The Shack—a homeless shelter in Nambour—has been proactive in assisting those living on the streets, offering rides to the local refuge center before the winds and rain intensify.

As the cyclone draws nearer, communities are urged to remain vigilant and prepared for the impending weather conditions, with authorities closely monitoring the situation and ready to provide assistance as needed.
