1 min read

In a heartbreaking turn of events, Cyclone Chido has left a trail of devastation across Mozambique, claiming at least 34 lives. The catastrophic storm unleashed its fury on Sunday, making landfall in Cabo Delgado province, where 28 lives were tragically lost. As the cyclone tore through the region, it continued its deadly path into Nampula and Niassa provinces, resulting in additional casualties.

Packing winds of up to 260 kilometers per hour and relentless rainfall of 250 millimeters within just 24 hours, Cyclone Chido injured 319 individuals and left a staggering impact on the local communities. The destruction of nearly 23,600 homes and 170 fishing boats has affected 175,000 people, according to the latest reports.

This northern region of Mozambique, frequently besieged by cyclones, faces compounded challenges due to ongoing conflict and pervasive underdevelopment. Before reaching Mozambique, Chido ravaged the Indian Ocean island of Mayotte, where fears persist about potential mass casualties.

As the cyclone continued its path, it moved into Malawi and was anticipated to dissipate near Zimbabwe, which had been bracing for heavy rains. The aftermath of Cyclone Chido serves as a stark reminder of the region’s vulnerability and the urgent need for resilience and recovery efforts.
