Russia’s flagship airline, Aeroflot, has canceled dozens of flights across the country following a cyber-attack claimed by two pro-Ukraine hacking groups. The disruption has affected travel in Russia’s vast territory, prompting officials to describe the situation as concerning.
The Kremlin expressed alarm over the incident, calling it a wake-up call for the nation. Prosecutors confirmed that the disruptions resulted from a cyber hack and have launched a criminal investigation. Senior politician Anton Gorelkin suggested that the attackers might be linked to unfriendly states, noting that Russia is currently under a digital assault. Another parliament member, Anton Nemkin, emphasized the need to identify not only the hackers but also those responsible for systemic security failures.
While Aeroflot has not specified how long it will take to restore normal operations, the disruption was visible at Moscow’s Sheremetyevo Airport, where departure screens turned red and many flights were canceled during the holiday season.
The airline’s shares fell by nearly four percent on Monday, underperforming the broader market, which declined by 1.4 percent. A claim of responsibility came from a hacking group called Silent Crow, which stated it acted in collaboration with Belarusian Cyber Partisans an activist group opposing President Alexander Lukashenko and advocating for Belarusian independence.
The statement from Silent Crow declared, “Glory to Ukraine! Long live Belarus!” Meanwhile, the Cyber Partisans said they were assisting Ukrainians in their fight against occupation by targeting Aeroflot and disrupting Russia’s largest airline.
There was no immediate response from Ukrainian authorities regarding the attack.
