Controversy Erupts Ahead of Final Test at Lord’s in England-India Series

2 min read

The fifth and final Test of the series between England and India is set to begin today at Lord’s, but it has already been overshadowed by a heated controversy surrounding the ball used in the match. Cricket fans and experts are debating over the integrity of the game, focusing on the condition of the ball, umpiring decisions, and allegations of unfair play.

During the third Test at Lord’s, an Indian team official raised concerns that the ball’s condition changed drastically after just 10 overs. According to the official, “There are allegations that the ball’s size and condition became abnormally worn, resembling a ball that has been used for about 30 to 35 overs.” However, umpires have refuted these claims, stating that they do not have any older or used balls in their possession from that period.

Indian players believe that instead of receiving a new, hard ball conducive to swing and seam, they were handed a softer, older ball that favored the English bowlers during the initial overs. This alleged inconsistency in ball condition and the failure to replace the ball at the right time have sparked outrage among the Indian camp. Ultimately, this controversy is linked to England’s narrow 22-run victory in that match, which gave them a 2-1 series lead heading into the final Test.

A senior Indian official expressed frustration, saying, “Look at the scorecard during that period; the game was significantly affected. The scoreboard did not indicate that an old ball was in play, yet that’s what was used during a crucial phase of the match. It’s clear that an old ball was deliberately handed to us, which changed the course of the game.” The official called for immediate intervention by the International Cricket Council (ICC) and urged a review of the rules regarding ball management to prevent such misconduct in the future.

This controversy comes amidst ongoing discussions about maintaining fairness and transparency in cricket, especially in high-stakes series. As the final Test begins, all eyes will be on the umpires and officials to ensure that the game proceeds without further disputes, with many demanding stricter regulations of ball changes and umpiring standards to uphold the sport’s integrity.
