A Commonwealth pre-election assessment mission has arrived in Bangladesh ahead of the upcoming national parliamentary polls. The delegation emphasized that its primary goal is to ensure the participation and confidence of all stakeholders in the electoral process.
On Sunday, October 26, the team met with the Chief Election Commissioner and other commissioners at the Election Commission headquarters in Agargaon, Dhaka. Following the meeting, Linford Andrews, head of the Commonwealth’s electoral support division, briefed reporters. He explained that the mission was dispatched on behalf of the Secretary-General, in line with the Commonwealth’s tradition of observing elections in member states.
Andrews stated that the mission’s purpose is to evaluate the overall preparations and environment for the election. Based on discussions with the commission and other stakeholders, the team will prepare recommendations to strengthen the process. He highlighted that the Commonwealth has consistently supported its members in making elections transparent, inclusive, and credible.
The delegation is led by Linford Andrews and includes Dr. Dinusha Panditaratne, Mrs. Nancy Kaniago, Mr. Sarthak Ray, and Mrs. Madonna Lynch. Their visit is expected to play a key role in shaping international confidence in Bangladesh’s electoral readiness.
This mission marks an important step in the lead-up to the national polls, as it will help determine whether a full observer mission will be deployed during the election itself. The presence of the Commonwealth team underscores the international community’s interest in ensuring a fair and participatory democratic process in Bangladesh.
