Coalition Plans to Launch AI Initiatives and Boost Business Loans in New South Wales

If the Coalition were in charge of New South Wales, artificial intelligence would be integrated across government agencies, with free loans available to businesses adopting the technology.

During the state budget reply on Thursday, Opposition Leader Mark Speakman outlined the alternative government’s vision to harness the power of AI, including the creation of the state’s first minister for artificial intelligence.

Mr. Speakman criticized the current government, saying it had failed to address persistently low productivity growth, which he claimed was forecasted to continue without significant reforms or technological breakthroughs.

“A Coalition government would embrace and embed responsible artificial intelligence across public service processes,” he told the legislative assembly.

He explained that the goal was to improve public services, reduce administrative burdens, and free up teachers, healthcare workers, and public servants to focus on more critical tasks.

“We have a talented public service,” he said. “But there are mundane jobs that AI could handle, making the public service more efficient.”

The opposition leader also announced plans to introduce a zero- or low-interest loan scheme to help small and medium-sized businesses integrate responsible AI into their operations.

On housing, the Coalition pledged to pause charges on developers to make home building more viable and increase housing stock. Currently, under the Housing and Productivity Contribution, developers in Greater Sydney are required to pay up to $12,000 per unit.
