Clashes Erupt at Anti‑Extortion Human Chain in Karwan Bazar

1 min read

Clashes broke out during a human chain protest in Karwan Bazar, Dhaka, where traders were demanding an end to extortion in the area. The incident occurred on Monday (29 December) afternoon near the wholesale raw‑goods market adjacent to Karwan Bazar.

According to eyewitnesses, attackers suddenly targeted the human chain, prompting traders to retaliate with sticks and chase them away. This led to several rounds of chase and counter‑chase between the traders and the miscreants. No casualties have been reported so far.

Angry traders chanted slogans such as “Tear down the dens of extortionists” and “There will be no place for extortionists in this country.” They alleged that despite their stance against extortion, the police administration failed to take appropriate action. Some traders claimed that police often remain silent in such situations because they receive monthly payments from extortion groups.
