Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ Breaks Pre-Sale Records with Tickets Selling a Year Before Release

2 min read

In a surprising move, Christopher Nolan’s upcoming film The Odyssey is already creating a buzz, with tickets selling out nearly a year before its scheduled release on July 17, 2026. This sets a new record for the longest pre-sale period in cinematic history, far exceeding the typical six-month window for summer blockbusters.

The marketing campaign for The Odyssey began earlier this month when a teaser trailer was shown in cinemas more than a year before the film’s release. On July 17, tickets went on sale for the film’s opening weekend in IMAX 70mm, Nolan’s preferred format known for its stunning visual quality. Less than a day after tickets were released, most were sold out, and scalpers started reselling them for over $200.

The huge demand shows just how much excitement surrounds Nolan’s new project. Fans are eager to see The Odyssey in 70mm, a classic large-format film stock that offers an immersive viewing experience. This format, first developed in the 1950s, has recently become popular again thanks to directors like Quentin Tarantino, Paul Thomas Anderson, and Ryan Coogler. Earlier this year, Ryan Coogler encouraged audiences to watch his vampire thriller Sinners in IMAX 70mm, helping to revive interest in the format.

Industry experts believe the success of IMAX screenings for Sinners may have influenced the decision to sell The Odyssey tickets so far in advance. One entertainment journalist noted, “There was such a strong response to IMAX screenings of Sinners that Hollywood couldn’t ignore it. Since The Odyssey is so highly anticipated, the team behind it probably thought, ‘How can we maximize this excitement even further?’”

As the production of The Odyssey nears completion, the overwhelming early demand proves Nolan’s unique ability to generate excitement and draw audiences long before the film hits theaters. The early ticket sales showcase his status as one of the most influential filmmakers working today.
