Chinese National Guilty in ACT Court Over Home Invasion and Assault

A 38-year-old Chinese national has been convicted in the ACT Supreme Court for his role in a violent home invasion during which victims claimed their attackers claimed to be from Chinese special forces.

Xiantao Shang was found guilty of aggravated burglary and assault after a joint commission trial relating to an incident in June 2023. He entered an apartment with a second man, seeking a woman known as ‘Linda.’

Shang claimed that ‘Linda’ owed him over $100,000, with additional debts to 46-year-old Wengao Zheng, believed to be connected to gambling. The victims said the attackers made threatening remarks about their affiliations with Chinese special forces.

‘Linda’ had not responded to their calls and had left town for some time but was later located in Canberra. Justice Verity McWilliam noted in her judgment that ‘Linda’ had previously been involved with Zheng, who conducted his own investigation by tracking her to the apartment through a site advertising sexual services.

Wengao Zheng pleaded guilty to his involvement in the home invasion, which involved violence and intimidation. The court’s verdict highlights the seriousness of the crime and the threats made during the attack.
