Chinese Ambassador to Bangladesh Yao Wen has dismissed recent claims by the US Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) that China is contemplating establishing a military presence in several countries, including Bangladesh.
After a meeting with Commerce Adviser Sheikh Bashir Uddin at his Dhaka office on Wednesday, Yao Wen told reporters, “The American intelligence agency’s report is not correct.”
The DIA’s annual “2025 Worldwide Threat Assessment” claimed that China was considering deploying military facilities in Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Myanmar. However, the report did not specify what form this military presence might take.
Yao Wen emphasized that China’s current focus is on strengthening economic and trade relations. He highlighted that a large Chinese business delegation, led by officials from the Chinese Commerce Ministry, is scheduled to visit Bangladesh to promote trade and economic cooperation.
He mentioned that several Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) are expected to be signed during this visit, which aims to further boost bilateral ties. The delegation, comprising 150 members, will arrive in Dhaka on May 31 and stay until July 2, engaging with local business leaders and government officials to advance economic collaboration.
