China Says ‘Glimmer of Hope’ for Middle East Peace as US and Iran Trade Escalating Warnings

China’s top diplomat has suggested that a “glimmer of hope” for peace is emerging in the Middle East, even as Iran vows to continue fighting and Washington warns it is prepared to intensify military pressure. The cautious optimism came amid a flurry of diplomatic calls by Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who said both Tehran and Washington had shown signs they were willing to return to negotiations.

Wang made the remarks during a call with Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, according to a statement released in Beijing late Wednesday. “With both the United States and Iran signalling a willingness to negotiate, a glimmer of hope for peace has emerged,” he said.

But that optimism was quickly challenged. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi insisted there had been no talks and that Tehran would not negotiate under pressure. “So far, no negotiations have taken place, and I believe our position is completely principled,” he said. “Speaking of negotiations now is an admission of defeat.”

US President Donald Trump, meanwhile, claimed Iran was participating in peace discussions but suggested Tehran was denying it publicly out of fear. “They are negotiating, by the way, and they want to make a deal so badly. But they’re afraid to say it, because they figure they’ll be killed by their own people,” he told Republican lawmakers at a dinner in Washington.

Violence on the ground has shown no sign of slowing after nearly four weeks of conflict, and hopes for de‑escalation have dimmed as both sides harden their rhetoric.

In a separate call with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, Wang said the “rights and wrongs” of the conflict were “crystal clear” and expressed support for Turkiye’s diplomatic efforts. Ankara has been engaged in what it describes as “intense” shuttle diplomacy with both Washington and Tehran in an attempt to halt the fighting.

Despite China’s attempt to inject optimism, the gulf between public statements from Washington and Tehran underscores how fragile any path to negotiations remains.
