Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has instructed authorities to prioritize the installation of solar panels on the rooftops of all government buildings across the country. He emphasized the need to launch a comprehensive ‘National Rooftop Solar Programme’ during a meeting held at the State Guest House Jamuna.
During the discussion, officials highlighted that Bangladesh lags behind neighboring countries in solar power development. According to the 2024 report by the International Renewable Energy Agency, while India generates 24 percent of its electricity from solar energy, Pakistan 17.16 percent, and Sri Lanka 39.7 percent, Bangladesh’s contribution remains only 5.6 percent.
The country’s Renewable Energy Policy 2025 aims for renewable sources to meet 20 percent of total power demand by 2030 and 30 percent by 2040. To reach these goals, the government has already initiated tenders for 55 land-based solar power plants with a combined capacity of 5,238 megawatts. However, officials noted that it will take until 2028 to fully implement these projects.
Chief Yunus directed the quick implementation of the rooftop solar initiative and urged that all government buildings, schools, colleges, madrasas, and hospitals be equipped with rooftop solar systems. He emphasized the importance of prompt action to harness solar energy and reduce reliance on traditional power sources.
