Chattogram City Corporation Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain has announced that hawkers will face eviction and legal action if they set up stalls at the New Market intersection before 4 PM. He made the declaration on Tuesday, November 4, while participating in an eviction drive in this key commercial area of the city.
The mayor emphasized that New Market is one of Chattogram’s most important business hubs and that no permanent structures will be allowed on roads or footpaths in the name of hawker trade. Any such encroachments, he warned, would be removed immediately.
However, Dr. Hossain clarified that hawkers will be permitted to conduct business from 4 PM until night, but under strict conditions:
- No permanent structures may be built.
- Goods must be sold from hand-pushed carts or portable setups with wheels.
- All waste and garbage must be cleaned up after business hours.
- Umbrellas may be used, but only if they do not obstruct pedestrian movement.
The mayor’s directive is part of a broader effort to ease traffic congestion and maintain order in one of the busiest parts of the city. Authorities have long struggled to balance the livelihoods of hawkers with the need to keep public spaces accessible for residents and businesses.
By setting a fixed time window and clear rules, the city aims to create a compromise that allows hawkers to earn a living while ensuring that roads and footpaths remain free during peak daytime hours.
