Celebrations marking Paris Saint-Germain’s historic Champions League victory in France took a tragic turn, with authorities reporting two deaths, hundreds injured, and over 500 arrests across the country. The festivities, which erupted after PSG defeated Inter Milan for the club’s first-ever Champions League title, were marred by violence and chaos on Saturday night.
A 17-year-old boy was stabbed to death during a street party in Dax, in southwestern France, according to the national police. Meanwhile, in Paris, a man lost his life after being struck by a car while celebrating in the streets, the interior minister’s office confirmed. Authorities are investigating both incidents to determine the circumstances.
In addition to fatalities, a police officer was accidentally hit by fireworks in northwest France and suffered severe eye injuries, leaving him in an induced coma. The interior ministry disclosed that 559 people were arrested nationwide, with 491 in Paris alone. Of those, 320 individuals are currently in police custody, including 254 in the capital.
The celebrations in Paris’s iconic Champs Elysees turned violent as supporters clashed with police. Riot officers responded with tear gas and water cannons to disperse the surging crowds after bus shelters were smashed and projectiles were hurled at law enforcement. Thousands gathered on the boulevard lined with high-end boutiques, celebrating PSG’s historic win but also engaging in destructive and confrontational acts.
As the city grapples with the aftermath of the celebrations, authorities continue to investigate the incidents and reinforce security measures to prevent further violence. The evening’s events serve as a stark reminder of how sporting triumphs can sometimes spiral into chaos, leaving tragic consequences in their wake.
