Century-Long Solar Eclipse Set to Darken Parts of the World

2 min read

People around the globe are preparing to witness a rare and extraordinary solar eclipse, which scientists say will last approximately 6 minutes and 23 seconds the longest of its kind in the century. This remarkable celestial event is expected to occur soon and promises to be a breathtaking spectacle.

According to reports from Metro and Times of India, the eclipse will be visible across regions including Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Sudan, Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and Somalia. During this event, the moon will completely block the sun’s light, creating a total eclipse known as “totality.” For a few minutes, the sky will darken as if night has fallen, and the shadow of the moon will gradually move across the Earth, covering a large area of southern Europe and North Africa. An estimated 89 million people will have the opportunity to witness this breathtaking darkness.

This eclipse is notable not only for its duration but also for its significance in astronomical history, as it will be one of the longest total solar eclipses of the century. The totality phase will last over six minutes, a duration considered extraordinary because typical total eclipses last only a few seconds to about 7.5 minutes. This extended duration is due to slight variations in the distances between the Earth, Moon, and Sun.

Experts explain that solar eclipses happen when the Moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun, blocking sunlight either partially or completely. This alignment only occurs during a New Moon, but because the Moon’s orbit is tilted relative to Earth’s, total eclipses do not happen every month. When the alignment is perfect, the Moon’s shadow falls on specific parts of the Earth, resulting in this awe-inspiring event.

The upcoming eclipse offers a rare opportunity for millions to witness one of nature’s most spectacular phenomena, as parts of the world will experience daylight turning into darkness in the middle of the day.
