Catastrophic Fire at Dhaka Secretariat Raises Sabotage Suspicions

2 min read

A devastating fire swept through Building-7 of the Bangladesh Secretariat in Dhaka on Thursday, damaging multiple floors and destroying vital documents. The blaze, which took over ten hours to extinguish, has raised suspicions of possible sabotage, especially after a firefighter was tragically killed by a truck while responding to the scene.

The fire broke out early in the morning and was reported at 1:52 AM, with firefighters arriving within two minutes. A total of 19 units battled the flames, which were under control by 8:05 AM and fully extinguished by 11:45 AM. Fortunately, no human casualties were reported, although a dog inside the building perished.

The affected building houses several key ministries, including Posts and Telecommunications, and the damage primarily impacted the seventh and eighth floors. FSCD Director General Brig Gen Jahed Kamal noted that the confined space and locked rooms complicated firefighting efforts.

In light of the incident, the government has formed an investigative committee to determine the cause of the fire and assess the damage, with a preliminary report due by December 30.

The tragedy deepened with the death of firefighter Sohanur Zaman Nayan, who was struck by a truck while working. The driver and his assistant were arrested and remanded to jail by a Dhaka court.

Political parties have expressed concern over the fire, demanding a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding this alarming event. The inquiry aims to uncover any potential wrongdoing in what is one of the nation’s most secure buildings.
