A Canberra police officer is recovering in hospital after being stabbed during the arrest of a man who allegedly led officers on a dangerous, high‑speed chase across the city’s south on Friday morning.
Police say the 26‑year‑old driver of a stolen Kia SUV repeatedly refused to stop, drove on the wrong side of the road at high speed and even steered the vehicle toward officers who were laying tyre spikes. Multiple reports of the Queensland‑registered SUV driving erratically were received throughout the morning.
After an initial failed attempt to stop the vehicle in Wanniassa shortly after 9am, officers located it again in Tuggeranong about an hour later. The chase ended around 11am in Richardson when the SUV collided with another car, slammed into a tree, and the driver attempted to flee on foot.
As officers moved in, the man allegedly brandished a knife, stabbing one officer in the arm and torso before being subdued. Paramedics treated the injured officer at the scene before transporting him to hospital with serious but non‑life‑threatening injuries.
Police say the accused provided false details during his arrest, and a replica firearm was found inside the stolen vehicle.
The Yarralumla man has been charged with dangerous driving, failing to stop, driving at police, assault, and possessing a prohibited firearm and knife without reasonable excuse. He is expected to appear in the ACT Magistrates Court on Saturday.
