A Canberra man is behind bars after being charged with murder and predatory driving over a deadly crash on the Monaro Highway in southern NSW.
Emergency crews were called to Colinton, about 70 kilometres south of Canberra, shortly after midnight on March 1 following reports of a two‑car collision. A 36‑year‑old woman from the Bega Valley, who was driving one of the vehicles, died at the scene from her injuries.
Police allege the 40‑year‑old driver of the second car fled the crash site and was later found in a paddock roughly 500 metres away more than 10 hours later, suffering a broken ankle. He was treated by paramedics before being taken to Canberra Hospital under police guard.
The accused, Waqas Haider, was extradited from the ACT on Tuesday and faced a NSW bail court today charged with five offences, including:
Murder
Two counts of predatory driving
Additional related charges
He did not apply for bail, which was formally refused. Haider is due to appear in court again in June.
