A grandfather from Canberra has been sentenced to more than 15 years in prison by the ACT Supreme Court after pleading guilty to multiple child sex offences, including crimes against his own granddaughter.
The 57-year-old admitted to six charges, which included possessing and sharing child abuse material online, grooming a child overseas, and ongoing child sexual abuse of his two-year-old granddaughter.
Court documents revealed police discovered nearly 900 images related to child exploitation on his devices, along with a document titled “The Paedophile’s Handbook.” Acting ACT Supreme Court Judge Michael Elkaim described the material as abhorrent, detailing how the man paid money to overseas individuals to groom a young child.
In her victim impact statement, the offender’s daughter explained that she had no contact with her father for several years. However, her relationship changed when she fell ill and sought her father’s help.
“I was vulnerable,” she told the court. She said she accepted her father’s assistance because she believed life was too short to dwell on the past and convinced herself that he had changed.
