Canberra Cafe Manager in Custody Over Alleged Sexual Assault of Teenager

2 min read

A Canberra cafe manager has been remanded in custody after being denied bail in the ACT Magistrates Court, facing serious allegations of sexual assault involving a 15-year-old girl. The man, Dhiren Patel, 32, who was also a part owner of the cafe, was charged with multiple offences related to the incident.

Patel faces three counts of rape, one charge of committing an act of indecency, and one count of supplying alcohol to a minor. The charges stem from allegations that he sexually assaulted the girl, who was an employee at the cafe, and allegedly told her, “let’s keep this a secret.”

Court proceedings revealed that part of the alleged offence was recorded on CCTV footage. Prosecutor Liam Taylor argued that the case was strong and expressed concerns that Patel might reoffend or pose a danger to the alleged victim if granted bail. He urged the court to refuse bail, stating that no conditions could adequately address the risks involved.

Defense lawyer James Maher opposed the bail application, claiming that Patel could be controlled if restrictions were placed on him, such as not leaving his house unless accompanied by his wife. However, Magistrate Alexandra Burt expressed reservations about releasing Patel even under strict conditions, citing concerns over public safety.

During proceedings, Maher noted that the CCTV footage was consistent with Patel’s admissions, which included being in the kitchen with the girl, with his clothes on the floor and himself naked in her presence. Maher described the case as “reasonably strong” but not overwhelming.

Magistrate Burt highlighted the significant power imbalance in the case, pointing to allegations that Patel provided alcohol to the girl and engaged in sexual relations with her while she was intoxicated. The court acknowledged the serious nature of the allegations and the potential risks involved in granting bail.

Patel remains in custody as investigations continue, and the case highlights the gravity of allegations involving minors and the importance of judicial caution in such sensitive matters.
