In a powerful display of solidarity and outrage, students at Dhaka University took to the streets, donning black badges and raising their voices against violence that has rocked the campus. The protest erupted on Wednesday as members of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) gathered to mourn the loss of their fellow activist and to call for urgent action from university authorities.
The demonstration was marked by chants echoing across the campus, with students demanding justice for Samyo and calling for the resignation of Vice-Chancellor Niaz Ahmed Khan and the proctor. “We are here to demand justice for Shammo’s murder. We want the resignation of the VC and the proctor,” declared Jashim, an activist and supporter of the cause.
Late Wednesday night, an impassioned torch procession snaked through the heart of the university, organized by a group called “Students against Terrorism.” Their message was clear and unwavering: justice must be served, and the culture of violence must be rooted out.
Samyo, a bright student of the 2018–19 session at the Institute of Education and Research, held the position of literary and publication secretary within JCD’s AF Rahman Hall unit. His life was tragically cut short Tuesday night when he was stabbed near Suhrawardy Udyan. Despite efforts to save him, he succumbed after being rushed to the hospital, leaving the campus and its students in mourning and in fury over the brutal act.
