After several days of intense and bloody clashes at the border, twenty Cambodian soldiers have been finally detained by Thai authorities. According to a report by Al Jazeera on Thursday, July 31, discussions are ongoing between the defense ministries of both countries to facilitate their return to Cambodia.
Mali Socheat, a spokesperson for Cambodia’s Ministry of Defense, stated, “We are in negotiations with Thailand regarding the release of the detained soldiers. However, before their repatriation, we want to ensure that all legal procedures are properly followed.”
He added, “We are making every effort to ensure that our soldiers are returned safely and swiftly through the highest level of cooperation with Thai authorities.” The incident occurred on Tuesday morning at 7:50 a.m., approximately eight hours after a ceasefire was declared. Cambodian soldiers entered a Thai-controlled area and took positions there, prompting the Thai military to detain them.
Thai officials have confirmed that the soldiers will be processed according to international law, but the exact nature of this process remains unclear. Despite ongoing tensions along the border, both nations are actively working towards a peaceful resolution.
Recent developments indicate that, while tensions persist, diplomatic efforts are underway to de-escalate the situation and prevent further conflict. The situation remains fluid, with both sides emphasizing the importance of dialogue and adherence to international legal standards to resolve the dispute amicably.
