A bushfire that posed a significant threat to lives and homes in Western Australia’s Wheatbelt region has been downgraded, providing some relief to residents in Northam, located about 100 kilometers northeast of Perth.
An emergency warning was issued just before 1 PM, advising locals that it was too late to evacuate. However, within an hour, the warning level was lowered to a Watch and Act as conditions improved, enabling firefighters to gain control over the blaze. The fire affected the southeastern area of the township, confined by Burlong Road and Morrett Street. A larger Advice area remains in effect for residents south of Throssell Street, west of Kilick Street, and east of Spencers Brook Road.
Compounding the challenge, Northam is currently experiencing a severe heatwave, with temperatures expected to soar to 42 degrees Celsius on Friday, according to the Bureau of Meteorology. DFES Superintendent Damien Pumphrey commended the tireless efforts of firefighters, stating, “Our crews in the community have done an amazing job with that fire; we’ve managed to suppress it.”
Despite the progress, Mr. Pumphrey urged residents to remain vigilant as conditions may change. “We encourage Northam residents to monitor Emergency WA for updates, especially given the ongoing severe weather and heatwave conditions expected to persist for the next few days.” As the community navigates the aftermath, attention remains focused on safety and preparedness.
