An attempted military coup against Burkina Faso’s President Captain Ibrahim Traoré has been thwarted before the plotters could execute their plan. The country’s defence and security forces intercepted the operation on Saturday, 3 January, according to official sources.
Local media reported that supporters of former president Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba were behind the attempted overthrow. Damiba briefly served as president in 2022 before being ousted by Traoré.
Several Suspects Arrested Overnight
After intelligence agencies learned of the plot, several suspects were arrested that same night. Among them, one close associate of Damiba has been identified as the chief architect of the attempted coup.
According to Central News South Africa, timely intelligence gathering was crucial in preventing the operation from moving forward.
Evidence Found on Mastermind’s Phone
Government officials stated that investigators recovered significant evidence of the coup plan from the mastermind’s mobile phone, including communications and operational details.
Public Reaction
Following news of the failed coup attempt, thousands of President Traoré’s supporters took to the streets in various parts of the country to show solidarity with the government.
The situation remains under control, with authorities continuing their investigation into the network behind the plot.
