Authorities in Providence are intensifying their search for the Brown University shooter, who remains at large following Saturday’s deadly attack in an engineering building classroom that left two students dead and nine wounded.
Search for the Suspect
- Police released new video footage showing the suspect running through residential streets near campus more than an hour before the attack.
- The suspect is described as having a stocky build and standing about 5 feet 8 inches (173 cm) tall.
- During the attack, the gunman fired more than 40 rounds from a 9 mm handgun, according to law enforcement sources.
- Authorities have received around 200 public tips and urged residents to check their camera systems for footage from the past week.
- A previously detained person of interest was cleared of involvement.
Heightened Security in Providence
- Ten state troopers have been deployed to support local police at schools.
- The district canceled after-school activities, sports events, and field trips “out of an abundance of caution.”
- The incident has sparked debate over campus security, with students calling for better locks and more cameras.
University Response
- Brown University President Christina Paxson defended the institution’s safety measures, noting the campus has 1,200 cameras and two emergency alert systems.
- One system sent text messages, calls, and emails to 20,000 individuals during the shooting.
- Paxson emphasized that responsibility lies with the shooter, not the university, saying: “Anxiety here is very natural, but the shooter is responsible.”
