One of Queensland’s leading state schools has apologised to students and parents after admitting it taught the wrong topic for a Year 12 external exam in Ancient History.
Brisbane State High School, which has more than 3,500 students, sent a letter on Monday acknowledging the mistake just two days before the scheduled exam.
The education department confirmed the school had mistakenly taught the unit on Augustus instead of Julius Caesar. While Augustus had been the set topic between 2020 and 2024, the subject changed this year. According to the school’s own senior student guide, Julius Caesar was listed as the correct focus.
The external exam, which accounts for 25 per cent of the final subject grade, is critical for students, with the remaining 75 per cent based on internal assessments. Two classes at the school are enrolled in the subject.
After realising the error, the school scrambled to prepare a resource on Julius Caesar to help students revise before Wednesday afternoon’s exam.
It remains unclear how the mistake occurred, but the school has apologised for the oversight and pledged to support affected students as they sit the high-stakes assessment.
