Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz Set to Reunite for New ‘The Mummy’ Film

3 min read

The beloved Mummy franchise is officially being revived, and this time it’s bringing back its most iconic duo. Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz, who first starred together in the 1999 blockbuster and its 2001 sequel, are in talks to return for a brand-new installment currently in development.

A Long-Awaited Return

According to recent reports, the project is already moving forward with Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett (the directing duo behind Ready or Not and the Scream revival) set to helm the film. The script has been penned by David Coggeshall, known for Orphan: First Kill and The Haunting in Connecticut 2. While plot details remain tightly under wraps, the return of Fraser and Weisz signals a continuation of the original saga rather than a reboot.

The Legacy of Fraser and Weisz in The Mummy

  • In 1999, Fraser starred as Rick O’Connell, a daring adventurer, opposite Weisz’s Evelyn “Evy” Carnahan, a librarian and historian. Together, they battled the resurrected high priest Imhotep in the lost city of Hamunaptra.
  • The pair reprised their roles in 2001’s The Mummy Returns, this time as a married couple with a young son, Alex. When Alex accidentally unleashed a curse, the family was thrust into another battle against Imhotep.
  • The franchise continued in 2008 with The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor, which introduced a new villain in the form of the Dragon Emperor. While Fraser returned, Weisz did not appear in that installment, with her role recast.

Previous Revival Attempts

Universal attempted to reboot the franchise in 2017 with Tom Cruise in the lead, but the film underperformed at the box office and failed to launch the planned “Dark Universe” of interconnected monster films. Fans have since longed for a return to the original characters and tone that made the late ’90s and early 2000s films so beloved.

Why This Matters

The reunion of Fraser and Weisz is being hailed as a nostalgic yet fresh opportunity to breathe new life into the franchise. Fraser, who recently enjoyed a career resurgence with his Oscar-winning performance in The Whale, and Weisz, an Academy Award winner for The Constant Gardener, bring both star power and credibility to the project.

While no release date has been announced, anticipation is already building among fans who grew up with the original films. With the directing team behind some of the most successful modern horror-thrillers at the helm, the new Mummy promises to blend action, adventure, and supernatural thrills in a way that honors the franchise’s legacy while charting a new course.
