Bangladesh has ramped up security along its border with Myanmar following the Arakan Army’s assertion of full control over the frontier. This ethnic militia’s strategic capture of the last Myanmar army outpost in Maungdaw marks a significant shift, granting them command over the entire 270-km border.
Rakhine State, now a flashpoint in Myanmar’s civil war, sees the Arakan Army opposing the military junta that seized power in 2021. The increasing control by the militia has prompted Bangladesh to enhance border vigilance.
Maj. Syed Ishtiaq Morshed, commanding the Border Guard Bangladesh in Teknaf, confirmed intensified monitoring and patrols to prevent any cross-border incidents. Despite lacking formal ties with the Arakan Army, Bangladesh has deployed its Navy, Coast Guard, and elite police forces to maintain order.
Gunfire echoes daily from across the border, reflecting the escalating conflict since clashes reignited in late October 2023. Sheikh Ehsan Uddin, Teknaf’s administrative head, reported heightened security measures, including increased patrols and a suspension of boat movements between Teknaf and Saint Martin Island.
Strict travel restrictions along the Naf River, the natural border between the two nations, aim to prevent unintended breaches into Myanmar territory. Authorities have ensured that Bangladeshi boats remain within safe bounds, allowing crossing only during high tide.
As tensions mount, Bangladesh remains vigilant, safeguarding its borders amidst the turmoil.
