Boorloo Bridge Closure Causes Disruption After Lighting Cable Failure

2 min read

The Boorloo Bridge, a key commuter link between Victoria Park and Point Fraser in Perth’s CBD, will remain closed until at least Wednesday evening after lighting cables fell from the structure into the Swan River.

The bridge, popular with cyclists and pedestrians and opened less than a year ago, suffered the incident around 5pm on Monday when approximately 70 metres of casing wrapped around electrical lighting cables broke away.

Transport Minister Rita Saffioti confirmed overnight inspections were carried out to secure the fittings: “The fastening didn’t hold. The team have been out overnight checking all the fastenings and also putting in extra fastenings to make sure the casing around the cable doesn’t break away again.”

A spokesperson for Main Roads WA said the bridge will remain closed until a detailed inspection is completed but assured there are no structural issues with the bridge itself. Authorities expect it to reopen late Wednesday or early Thursday.

When the bridge opened in December 2024, the WA government hailed it as a project that would “significantly enhance connectivity, safety, and amenity for approximately 3,000 pedestrians and cyclists” who previously relied on the constrained Causeway Bridge.

The bridge and surrounding precinct works cost $198 million, making the closure a significant setback for commuters and a high-profile issue for Perth’s transport network.
