Bollywood Power Couple Takes Aim at AI Deepfakes in Landmark Court Battle

2 min read

Bollywood stars Abhishek Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan have filed a high-profile legal petition in India, urging the courts to block the creation and spread of AI-generated videos that misuse their voice and likeness. Their primary target is YouTube, owned by Google, which they accuse of enabling the proliferation of deepfake content.

The couple is asking the Delhi High Court not only to remove infringing videos but also to compel Google to implement safeguards that prevent such content from being used to train other AI platforms. Legal filings reviewed by the court argue that YouTube’s current policies allow users to consent to third-party AI training, which could amplify the reach of misleading or unauthorized videos.

“Such content being used to train AI models has the potential to multiply the instances of use of any infringing content,” the filings state, warning of a ripple effect that could damage reputations and violate intellectual property rights.

India does not yet have explicit laws protecting personality rights, unlike many US states. However, a growing number of celebrities are turning to the courts to assert control over their digital identities. The Bachchans’ case marks a significant moment in the legal battle over AI and celebrity rights in India.

The Delhi High Court has asked Google’s legal team to submit a written response ahead of the next hearing scheduled for January 15.
