A man’s body was discovered near Altona Pier in Melbourne’s west after a snorkelling accident on Saturday morning. Police say the man had been snorkelling with a friend at Altona Beach when they became separated in the water.
The incident occurred around 10:30 AM, when the pair was reportedly enjoying the waters off the popular beach. The friend managed to return safely to shore, but when the man failed to surface, the friend raised the alarm. Emergency services responded quickly, and search efforts were launched immediately. Tragically, the man’s body was found by police just before 11:40 AM, floating in the water near Altona Pier.
Authorities have not yet released the man’s identity, and it is unclear whether he was wearing a life jacket or whether any medical conditions may have contributed to the incident. Police and emergency teams spent several hours at the scene conducting investigations and securing the area.
A report will now be prepared for the coroner to determine the cause of death. While the circumstances surrounding the incident are still under investigation, authorities are urging beachgoers to exercise caution when swimming or snorkelling, particularly in areas with strong currents or limited visibility.
Altona Beach is a popular destination for both locals and tourists, known for its calm waters, but incidents like this highlight the importance of safety when engaging in water activities. Local authorities are expected to release further updates as the investigation continues.
