The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has announced a preliminary list of candidates for 237 constituencies as the country prepares for the upcoming 13th Jatiya Sangsad election.
The announcement came on Monday, November 3, at a press conference held at the BNP Chairperson’s political office in Gulshan, Dhaka. The list was unveiled by BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, following a Standing Committee meeting chaired by the party’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman.
Among the most notable names, BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia will contest from three constituencies: Feni-1, Bogura-7, and Dinajpur-3. Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman will run from Bogura-6, marking his direct participation in the polls. Mirza Fakhrul himself will contest from Thakurgaon-1, while Sanjida Tuli, leader of the women’s platform Mayer Dak, has been nominated for Dhaka-14.
Mirza Fakhrul told reporters that after 16 years, Bangladesh is heading toward what he described as a truly democratic election, scheduled for February 2026. He emphasized that the list represents potential candidates, and adjustments will be made in coordination with allied parties where joint movement partners are fielding nominees.
In an earlier interview, Fakhrul explained that the BNP has been conducting field-level surveys to ensure that candidates with the strongest chances of victory are selected.
The press conference was attended by senior BNP leaders, including Dr Khandaker Mosharraf Hossain, Mirza Abbas, Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, Abdul Moyeen Khan, Major (Retd.) Hafizuddin Ahmed, Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury, Selima Rahman, Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku, and Dr AZM Zahid Hossain.
The unveiling of the candidate list signals the BNP’s intent to mount a nationwide challenge across nearly all constituencies, setting the stage for a fiercely contested election.
