Blues Triumph Over Waratahs in Inaugural Super Rugby Women’s Championship Final

In a commanding display, the NSW Waratahs faced a 36-5 defeat against the Blues in the inaugural Super Rugby Women’s Championship final held in Auckland. The Blues took control early, with 18-year-old fullback Braxton Sorensen-McGee scoring two first-half tries, complemented by a score from Elizabeth Moimoi, to establish a 19-0 lead at halftime.

While the Waratahs managed some possession at the start of the second half, the Blues quickly regained dominance with a stunning try from New Zealand rugby legend Portia Woodman-Wickliffe. Cheyenne Tuli-Fale then powered over, extending the Blues’ lead to 31-0. The Waratahs finally got on the scoreboard when winger Desiree Miller skillfully linked up with an Arabella McKenzie kick to score.

However, the Blues had the final word. Krysten Cottrell capitalized on a ruck, stealing the ball and scoring as the Waratahs attempted to regroup, sealing the match at 36-5.

The game was played under challenging conditions at North Harbour Stadium, affected by the remnants of Cyclone Tam, which left thousands in the Auckland and Northland regions without power. Despite the weather, both teams showcased expansive running rugby in the opening moments.

“It was a difficult game but also really fun,” said Waratahs captain Emily Chancellor. “We haven’t had much practice in these conditions in Australia this season. Well done to the Blues; they played exceptionally well.”

Sorensen-McGee’s first try highlighted the Blues’ impressive skill, as she finished off a backline move, stepping inside two defenders from 30 meters out and crossing the line under the posts. Moimoi added to the lead before Sorensen-McGee struck again, capitalizing on brilliant teamwork as the Blues countered from deep in their own half.
