Early Thursday morning, a devastating fire erupted at the Shahi Masjid slum in the Gabtoli area of Dhaka, wreaking havoc and destroying more than 150 shanties before firefighters could bring it under control.
The fire ignited at approximately 3:08 AM, and the first units from the Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) arrived on the scene within just four minutes. A total of eight firefighting units were deployed, working tirelessly to contain the blaze, which was declared under control by 4:36 AM and fully extinguished by 6:10 AM.
According to Warehouse Inspector Anwarul Islam, the inferno also consumed a parked bus and several shops in the vicinity, with preliminary estimates suggesting the total loss could reach around Tk1 crore.
Fortunately, no casualties have been reported thus far, though the cause of the fire remains under investigation. The incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by slum communities in urban areas, where rapid response can be hampered by the dense living conditions. As authorities work to determine the cause and assess the damage, the affected residents are left grappling with the aftermath of this devastating event.
