Billions Looted in the Name of ‘Spirit of Liberation War’

Under the former Awami League government, numerous projects claiming to promote the ‘Spirit of the Liberation War’ have come under scrutiny for alleged corruption and misappropriation. These projects were ostensibly aimed at honoring the country’s independence movement, but investigations reveal that billions of taka were embezzled through covert thefts and deceitful practices, leading to widespread financial waste.

Led by Deputy Director Md. Moniruzzaman, a team from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is currently examining these allegations. Reports indicate that over the past four years, more than 5000 crore taka has been allocated for various projects, with the highest levels of looting occurring in promotional initiatives.

For example, in 2022, an allocation of 21.95 crore taka was made for a project titled “Implementation of Bangabandhu’s Ideology and the Spirit of Liberation War.” Although the project claimed to organize cultural events and documentation, nothing of the sort was actually carried out. Instead, a few photographs and videos were presented to declare the project completed.

Similarly, in 2020, a project called “Inspiring the New Generation with the Spirit of Liberation” received over 49 crore taka. However, the actual activities conducted under this initiative were minimal and conducted on a very small scale.

Furthermore, the much-publicized ‘Operation Jackpot’ film, produced under government directives, reportedly cost a significant amount of money but failed to reach the masses effectively. Despite the expenditure, the film’s viewership remained very low, raising questions about its transparency and utility.

These projects, used as avenues for siphoning off public funds, are now under investigation. The revelations of such corruption have sparked widespread public anger and concern, highlighting the need for accountability and transparency in government projects. The nation’s economy and public trust have suffered greatly due to these misappropriations.
