In a dramatic escalation of tensions, workers from Beximco Group blocked the Chandra-Nabinagar highway at the Sreepur bus stand area in Ashulia on Wednesday, demanding the reopening of their closed factory. The protest erupted around 4 PM, leading demonstrators to set fire to two buses and a truck near the Mojar Mill area.
Ashulia Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nur Alam Siddique confirmed that police were swiftly deployed to the scene, managing to stabilize the situation. However, the protest turned chaotic, with several vehicles vandalized and reports of attacks on journalists covering the event.
The unrest follows an ultimatum issued by Beximco workers’ union leaders during a rally on Tuesday, demanding the factory’s reopening by 3 PM on Wednesday, along with assurances of banking services and other support for the workers. With no response from authorities, the workers resorted to street demonstrations.
OC Siddique stated that efforts are ongoing to identify and hold accountable those responsible for the violence during the protest.
