Bank Executive Found Dead in Gold Coast Hinterland Amid Serious Charges

A Commonwealth Bank executive accused of attempting to procure underage girls for sex has been found dead in the Gold Coast hinterland, police have confirmed. Christopher James McCann, 50, was extradited from Sydney to face court on a single charge related to online child exploitation.

Queensland police announced that McCann was discovered dead in Springbrook National Park on Wednesday. Last week, he was arrested in Sydney and appeared at Central Local Court.

Detectives from Brisbane had applied for his extradition to Queensland to face charges of using the internet to solicit a child under the age of 16 for sex. Court documents reveal that McCann, who had no prior criminal record, allegedly asked an 18-year-old sex worker in Brisbane to help him find two children for sexual activity.

According to court proceedings, McCann traveled to Brisbane in May and stayed in a hotel. The 18-year-old woman allegedly brought two underage girls to meet him, but he did not open the door to them. A hotel staff member later became involved, and police reports indicate authorities had previously intercepted McCann’s phone, searched his home, and seized electronic devices.

McCann attempted to apply for bail and sought to travel to Brisbane himself, but Magistrate Clare Farnan rejected the request, citing the seriousness of the allegations. She stated, “Whilst the single count before the court is one which did not result in any harm to an actual child, it is an allegation of Mr McCann having allegedly tried to procure underage girls for a sexual act.”

Following the court’s decision, McCann was extradited and flown to Brisbane under police escort. His death in the hinterland remains under investigation.
