Bangladesh’s Parliament to Sit Twice Daily as House Races to Convert 133 Ordinances Into Law

Bangladesh’s Jatiya Sangsad will begin holding two sessions a day starting Tuesday in an urgent push to meet its constitutional obligation to convert 133 ordinances into law. The announcement was made in parliament on Monday, signalling one of the most intensive legislative schedules in recent years.

Chief Whip Nurul Islam told lawmakers that the House must accelerate its work to clear the unprecedented backlog of bills. Under the new schedule, the first session will begin at 10:30am, followed by a second session at 3:30pm.

To prioritise the passage of the ordinances, Nurul Islam confirmed that Thursday’s Private Members’ Day has been cancelled. He added that preparations have also been made to hold a Friday session if required, underscoring the urgency of the task.

The move reflects the scale of legislative work facing the current parliament, which must formalise ordinances issued earlier under constitutional provisions.
