A young man from Bangladesh’s Brahmanbaria district has lost his life in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Mohammad Akram Hossain, 25, a native of Ashuganj upazila, was killed in a missile attack while fighting on behalf of the Russian military.
Akram’s family received the devastating news on Friday afternoon, April 18, when a fellow soldier from Russia called to inform them of his death. The young man had traveled to Russia nearly a year ago, dreaming of a better life and hoping to lift his family out of poverty. Instead, his aspirations were cut short amid the chaos of war.
Born to Morshed Mia, a day laborer from Hosenpur village, Akram initially went to Russia after borrowing money. He first worked as a welder for a Chinese company, but the low wages eventually drove him to join the Russian army as a contract soldier through a broker’s facilitation.
Throughout his time in Ukraine, Akram shared several photos on Facebook, depicting his experiences in the war zone. Despite repeated pleas from his family for him to return home, he expressed that there was no possibility of coming back. Since April 13, his family and acquaintances in Russia had lost all contact with him.
The tragic update came when one of his comrades contacted his family, confirming that Akram had been killed in a missile strike in Ukraine, along with several other members of his unit.
Ashuganj Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Rafe Mohammad confirmed the incident, stating that authorities had contacted the relevant ministry after learning about the death. Once his body is identified, officials will coordinate with the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare to arrange necessary documentation and repatriation for his family.
