An iftar and dinner reception was held in Sydney to honour professional Bangladeshi journalists who travelled to Australia to cover the Bangladesh women’s football team. The event, organised on 5 March by the Television Reporters Unity of Bangladesh (TRAB) Australia, recognised around 30 visiting journalists for their contribution to promoting women’s football on the global stage.
Speakers praised the media’s role in showcasing the recent rise of Bangladesh women’s football, noting that stories of struggle, success and resilience have inspired a new generation of players. They said the visibility created by journalists has helped motivate the athletes and strengthen support for the team at home and abroad.
Former national cricketer Imrul Kayes, attending as chief guest, expressed confidence that Bangladesh’s women’s team would not only shine in the Asian Cup but eventually prove their capability on the world stage. He said their steady progress would help secure a stronger position in international football.
The event was presided over by TRAB Australia president and Voice of Sydney editor Orko Hasan, with general secretary Humayun Kabir Roz and Galib Ibne Riaz jointly conducting the programme. Special guests included former Sydney councillor Shah Zaman Titu, Australia Bangladesh Business Forum president and BFF representative Abdul Khan Ratan, Bangladesh Association of Australia president Monirul Haque George, Australia Bangladesh Journalists Association president Abdul Matin, Australia Bangladesh Press and Media Club president Rahmatullah, and playwright Belal Dhali.
Speakers noted that Bangladesh’s participation in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup for the first time was the result of years of steady development. Players like Afida, Mili and Rituparna have become symbols of inspiration for young athletes, while their fighting performances against strong opponents have impressed the Bangladeshi diaspora.
TRAB Australia presented certificates of honour to the visiting journalists, along with special recognition awards for BFF president Tabith Awal, former cricketer Imrul Kayes and popular sports platform BDCrictime.
Guests expressed hope that Bangladesh’s women’s football journey will continue to rise and that one day, the team will thrill crowds on Australian soil in a major international tournament. The Bangladeshi community abroad, they said, eagerly awaits that moment.
