The plan for sports villages or hubs in Bangladesh has been in the works for a long time but has faced various challenges preventing its implementation. However, the Ministry of Youth and Sports has decided to establish sports hubs in eight divisions of the country with the assistance of the United Arab Emirates (UAE). This announcement was made by Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan, the Youth and Sports Advisor, on the occasion of National and International Sports Day. A friendly football match was held at the National Stadium featuring underprivileged children, and following the match, he shared details with reporters.
“We have been considering the establishment of a Central Sports Village from the beginning. The UAE will assist us in this initiative. We plan to decentralize sports development by creating sports hubs in eight divisions,” he stated.
Although Bangladesh initially discussed the sports hub project with China, the final agreement was reached with the UAE. Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus has recently worked on this during his visit to the UAE. The Youth and Sports Ministry is actively working on the details of the sports hubs. The sports advisor mentioned, “We are currently engaged in designing and other necessary preparations. We will disclose the required funding soon. I hope we can start work in the next fiscal year.”
The Bangladesh Krira Shiksha Protishtan (BKSP) is currently the only institution for sports training in the country, but it has struggled to produce athletes of international caliber. To address this, the Youth and Sports Advisor has proposed the establishment of a Sports Institute, and a committee has been formed to explore this initiative. A report has already been submitted by the committee. However, it remains uncertain whether the Sports Institute will receive funding.
Most of the national federations are located around the National Stadium, but many sports venues and federation offices are lacking in this area. The sports advisor assured that solutions to these issues are being sought.
The National Sports Council is forming ad-hoc committees for various federations and at the local level. Following the announcement of the Archery Federation’s committee, the search committee’s convener threatened to resign. In response to this, the advisor commented, “There is a lack of coordination here. Our policy decision was that no one could hold a top position for more than two terms. This is why changes have been made in the committee. We are coordinating with the search committee, and the ministry will make the final decisions, taking many factors into consideration.”
