A jailed leader of the now‑banned Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) was allowed to briefly view the bodies of his wife and nine‑month‑old son at the gates of Jashore Central Jail on Saturday evening, after authorities denied his request for parole. Prison officials said the emotional encounter lasted only about five minutes.
According to Jashore Central Jail Superintendent Abid Hasan, an ambulance carrying the two bodies entered the prison compound around 7:30pm, enabling Jewel Hasan Saddam, president of the BCL Bagerhat Sadar Upazila unit, to see his child for the first and last time. The infant, Sezad Hasan, was born after Jewel’s arrest.
Witnesses described a heartbreaking scene as Jewel held his deceased son in his arms, with family members and prison staff visibly moved by the moment. Jewel’s wife, Kaniz Suborna Sharnali, 22, was also found dead alongside the child.
Family members told reporters that Kaniz had become increasingly distressed over repeated failures to secure Jewel’s temporary release, and they believe she may have taken her own life and that of her son. However, police officials cautioned against drawing conclusions before the autopsy results are released.
The bodies were handed over to relatives after post‑mortem examinations, with funeral rites scheduled for late Saturday night. Despite multiple attempts, the family was unable to obtain approval from the district administration for Jewel’s parole, which would have allowed him to attend the burial.
Superintendent Hasan said that although parole was denied, authorities permitted the bodies to be brought to the prison on humanitarian grounds so Jewel could see them one final time.
Jewel had gone into hiding following the fall of the Awami League government on 5 August 2024. He was arrested on 5 April the following year in connection with several cases and was transferred to Jashore Central Jail on 15 December. His family has repeatedly sought his release without success.
