Bangladesh Set for Starlink’s Satellite Internet Launch in 90 Days

During initial trial broadcasts, Starlink operated using its foreign satellite broadband gateway. However, for commercial operations, the company must comply with the Non-Geostationary Satellite Orbit (NGSO) policy, which requires the establishment of a local broadband gateway or an International Internet Gateway (IIG).

Starlink, a subsidiary of Elon Musk’s SpaceX, has been in discussions with Bangladeshi regulatory authorities to navigate the licensing process. The government has underscored the need for adherence to national regulations, including spectrum allocation and security requirements, before granting full operational approval.

In a notable gesture, Dr. Yunus has extended a formal invitation to Elon Musk to visit Bangladesh for the official launch of the service. This initiative is particularly timely, as it aims to mitigate the frequent internet shutdowns that have disrupted freelance work and business activities across the nation.

The entry of Starlink into the Bangladeshi market is anticipated to provide a vital solution for uninterrupted connectivity. Local companies are already partnering with Starlink to set up ground stations, facilitating the integration of satellite connectivity into the existing infrastructure.

Dr. Yunus emphasized that this new service will complement national efforts led by organizations such as Grameen Bank and Grameenphone, furthering the goal of enhanced digital accessibility for all.
